Science Department

1

Vision:

Students with a passion for Science.

Mission:

Nurturing an inquiring, scientific mind and a spirit of perseverance in the pursuit of science.

Goals:

1. To sustain value-added ‘O’-level Science results

2. To promote vibrant Science learning.

Our Programme

With restructured Lower Sec Science (LSS) modular system, Sec 1E/NA syllabi now focus on General Science, Biology and Life Sciences while the Sec 2E/NA syllabi focus on Science (Physics/Chemistry). This has enabled science teachers, specialized in their own field of teaching, to better design and incorporates activities such as Project Work and Lead ICT Project into the LSS curriculum to enhance the content delivery with Inquiry-Based (IBL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL). This is in line with the MOE TLLM initiative and the Science Curriculum Framework which encapsulates the trust of science education to prepare our students to be sufficiently adept as effective citizen, able to function in and contribute to an increasingly technologically-driven world. Central to the curriculum framework is the planned inculcation of the spirit of scientific inquiry. On top of classroom teaching, teachers now leverage on IT to enhance the teaching & learning of Science through use of PDA data loggers and tablet-PC to gather and process information from their outdoor activities as well as Inquiry-based Lab activities. Examples of these activities are hydroponics, extraction of essential oil and effects of environment on microhabitats for all Sec 1E/NA; use of PDA data loggers and sensors in Lab activities for all Sec 2E/NA LEAD ICT & TLLM Ignite! programmes; and Higher order Scientific Thinking skill for selected Sec 3 & 4 classes through School-based Practical Assessment (SPA). Students get to present these projects in Questa Club Exhibition organised by Singapore Science Centre, School’s Project Work exhibition and MOE ExCEL Fest.

With the incorporation of SPA in Lower and Upper Sec Science curriculum, teachers collaborate to design a series of Inquiry-based experiments. While students learn a range of standard experimental skills specified by the SEAB for ‘O’ Level, they also learn to deduce the scientific laws and principles through a series of questions and answers.

To better prepare our graduating students for the subject in the GCE ‘O’ & ‘N’ Level Examinations, structured intensive revision and remedial programmes are conducted for all graduating classes.
