School Achievements (April) – ‘Redesign Your Library’ Competition & 'World Spelling Day' Competition

In the month of April, our students have done our school proud by winning two national competitions. 35 schools took part in the 'Redesign Your Library' Competition organised by Civica, and Yuan Ching emerged as one of the top two chosen schools. The aim of the competition was to design a library that would foster community spirit and sharing. Using the Project ACT's platform for students' voices to be heard, the Library Club made use of the feedback given and decided that our library should be redesigned with a marine theme to facilitate students' self-directed learning there.

Furthermore, Yuan Ching also celebrated the success of Moses Seow, aged 14, who came in 2nd in Singapore for the 'World Spelling Day' competition. There were about 30,000 participants from Singapore and he fought bravely on the day of the competition.

Well done, Yuan Ching!

Sports Day

This year’s Sports Day was held in conjunction with the International Friendship Day. During Sports Day, our students enjoyed a spectrum of track and field events. The students were also given the opportunities to race against teachers. A new event, Tug-of-war was introduced to inculcate resilience and team spirit among the classes. To encourage parents' involvement on this day, a 3-legged soccer match was added to foster parents child bonding and school’s partnership with parents. Two competitions were also held concurrently to mark International Friendship Day, which were the Inter-Class Cheering Competition and the Amazing International Race, led by NE Ambassadors. It definitely marks a day for our students to learn about excellence and sportsmanship.

Speech & Prize Giving Day

Our school’s 34th Speech & Prize Presentation Day (SPPD) was held on 5 April 2012. The theme for this year 34th SPPD was "Our Pulses - Aligned & Engaged". We were honoured to have Mrs Chean Wei Fang, Superintendant West 4, School Division, as our guest-of-honour. Besides presenting the awards to our awardees, she was also invited to officiate the opening of our Yuan Ching’s Garden of Values. Performances in the concert were done by our students from the performing arts CCAs like Chinese Dance, Malay Dance, Indian Dance, Concert Band and Guzheng Ensemble. This served as a platform for our students to showcase their talents. The entire performance, followed the storyboard designed to suit our theme, was aligned to our vision: A Thinker, an Achiever, a Global Citizen. "Like the leaf and the beads of water, we grow each child. Our hearts beat as one with the strength of our commitment to our children". Our pulses are aligned and engaged in this endeavour.

Meet-The-Parents (MTP) Session - Secondary 2, 4 and 5

The dialogue session was held on 9 March 2012. This is another of our initiatives to engage our stakeholders. As we value strong school-home partnership, the purpose of the session was to enhance the parent-teacher relationship by allowing the parents to be aware of their child's performance in school. We strongly believe that through our partnership with parents, this will play an important role in achieving quality student outcomes holistically. From this session, parents were encouraged to advise their child on the benefits of self directed learning as well as ensuring that the child takes ownership of his/her own learning and development. Through this session, the school hopes that parents will continue to encourage their children to be more self-motivated in achieving holistic development.

Annual Cross Country 2012

For this year’s Annual Cross country that happened on 24 February 2012, the purpose was for students, parents and teachers to acquire physical skills to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Values card was also introduced so that the teachers serve as a motivation for the students to run. One value displayed by the student represents one signature on the values card. With every three signatures, students have pledged for the educator to run 100m of the cross country route. There were a total of 13 educators (including our Principal, Mrs Menon and Vice-Principal, Mdm Ivy Koh) and five parents who took part in this year's Annual Cross country. All of our students displayed their sportsmanship and took part in the run. It was definitely a success!

Shandong Hosting

The Principal, teachers and 26 students from Shandong Jinan No.8 Middle School arrived on 1 February 2012 for a school exchange programme. Together with their buddies from Yuan Ching, they embarked on a journey in the classrooms, as well as visiting Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India. They were also invited to immerse themselves in the various performing arts CCAs, such as Guzheng Ensemble, various Dance groups and Band. An art appreciation programme was also planned where students learnt to make various art works as memories. This was definitely a fruitful exchange programme, where the ties between Yuan Ching and Shandong Jinan No.8 Middle School became stronger. The students from both schools have also benefited from this programme by learning about each country’s cultures and beliefs.

Ethnic Celebration and MT Fortnight

During Lunar New Year, Yuan Ching students were engaged in various celebrations organised by the Mother Tongue Department, such as having assembly performances, organising competitions, as well as having cultural exchange. Throughout the two weeks, students had various events for them to reflect on the different cultures and ethnicity groups. On 2 February 2012, a carnival, “Mother Tongue Fiesta”, was also organised. The purpose was to engage and enrich the minds of students with various cultures. On that day, the excitement of the students grew when they could experience traditional food and games during the carnival. It was a success as students were exposed not only to the traditional food and games, but also to have the opportunity to appreciate culture through Chinese Calligraphy and the playing of Guzhengs.
